April 24, 2005 "Living in Harmony"
Speaker Jackie Rose

Welcome to the Prime Timers Adult Bible Fellowship

The Prime Timers Adult Bible Fellowship is aimed at people in the prime of life, generally from 50 to 65, but whatever physical age you are we invite and welcome you to join us and see if our group is for you! We meet every Sunday in the Payne Education building, second floor, room 210-212, from 10:15 to 10:50am. Coffee and donuts are provided free!

Our leader/speaker Jackie Rose had very good news indeed.

Lots of news from Prime Timers this week!

At the beginning of class anyone can "buy the microphone" for $1 and bring us news of their family, or whatever they want. This week brought lots of good news, starting with the very good news that our leader Jackie Rose's doctors declared that "after 6 years, we can say with authority that you are CURED!"

This was followed by member Anna's news about her two children and Gerry's news that her son had come back safely from Iraq, and a word from Dr. Bill.

Living the Christian Life

The readings this week, as with the last month or so, are from Paul's letters to the Romans. The reading fell into two parts, a spiritual entreaty to live a sacrificial life to God's service, defined foremost by loving others, and second a series of practical actions that express what loving others (persons within our community and those outside our community) looks like.

The class divided into four two groups discuss the impediments to being in loving relationships and to define actions that can help overcome those impediments.

The winning actions were:

  1. Perform service  for others

  2. Pray more to overcome our own selfishness

  3. Be more compassionate to others

  4. Prayer and reflection

Come back next week to see how we did with our own answers!

The Lesson for Sunday, April 24 is titled "Living in Harmony"

Key Verses:  Romans 15:5-6

Focus of the Lesson:  People often become impatient with those of a different opinion or perspective, particularly if it is perceived as juvenile or ill conceived. How can Christians bear with one another when we have different opinions of what constitutes a faithful lifestyle? Paul encourages us to have patience with one another.

The reading is Romans 14:1-13; 15:5-6. This text is from the New Revised Standard Version.

1 Welcome those who are weak in faith, but not for the purpose of quarreling over opinions. 2 Some believe in eating anything, while the weak eat only vegetables. 3 Those who eat must not despise those who abstain, and those who abstain must not pass judgment on those who eat; for God has welcomed them. 4 Who are you to pass judgment on servants of another? It is before their own lord that they stand or fall. And they will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make them stand.
5 Some judge one day to be better than another, while others judge all days to be alike. Let all be fully convinced in their own minds. 6 Those who observe the day, observe it in honor of the Lord. Also those who eat, eat in honor of the Lord, since they give thanks to God; while those who abstain, abstain in honor of the Lord and give thanks to God.
   7
We do not live to ourselves, and we do not die to ourselves. 8 If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. 9 For to this end Christ died and lived again, so that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.
   10
Why do you pass judgment on your brother or sister? Or you, why do you despise your brother or sister? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. 11 For it is written, ‘As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall give praise to God.’
12 So then, each of us will be accountable to God.
13 Let us therefore no longer pass judgment on one another, but resolve instead never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of another.

5 May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with Christ Jesus, 6 so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
